Engaging youth in STEM exploration.

FIRST LEGO League introduces science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to children ages 4-16 through fun, exciting hands-on learning. Participants gain real-world problem-solving experiences through a guided, global robotics program, helping today’s students and teachers build a better future together.

Our three divisions, Discover, Explore and Challenge, inspire youth to experiment and grow their critical thinking, coding, and design skills through hands-on STEM learning and robotics

3 FIRST LEGO League Divisions

FIRST LEGO League guides youth through STEM learning and exploration at an early age. From Discover, to Explore and then to Challenge, students will understand the basics of STEM and apply their skills in an exciting competition while gaining productive learning habits, confidence, and teamwork skills along the way.

For children ages 4-6, Discover is a playful introductory STEM program ignites their natural curiosity and builds their habits of learning with hands-on activities in the classroom and at home using LEGO® DUPLO® bricks.

A new and exciting Challenge is presented every year, and each team of four children begins their exploration of a real-world theme with an exclusive LEGO Education Discovery Set. With this set as a starting point, they build a solution to the Challenge with LEGO® DUPLO® elements.

Event Experience

FIRST LEGO League Discover closes with an in-school celebration event, where students work with other teams to solve a final collaborative challenge, demonstrating for friends and family the skills and concepts they’ve learned.

In Explore, teams of students ages 6-10 focus on the fundamentals of engineering as they explore real-world problems, learn to design, and code and create unique solutions made with LEGO bricks and powered by LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0.

Each year in early August, FIRST LEGO League Explore releases a new Challenge for teams that focuses on a scientific topic. Teams are sent on a journey of discovery to learn all they can about the topic, then present their findings in the form of a team poster and a LEGO model that moves.

Event Experience

The FIRST LEGO League Explore season ends with Festivals, where students showcase their team models and posters and share what they’ve learned with volunteers, friends, and family.

A festival can be as simple as a meeting of a team, families, and friends to share what was learned during the season. Larger festivals offer teams an opportunity to share and learn from one another.

Friendly competition is at the heart of Challenge, as teams of students ages 9-16* engage in research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering – building and programming a LEGO robot that navigates the missions of a robot game.

As part of Challenge, teams also participate in a research project to identify and solve a relevant real-world problem.

Event Experience

FIRST LEGO League Challenge teams prepare all season to compete at regional tournaments, where judges provide valuable feedback on their robot, code, and invention.

The final test of their work comes at the Robot Game table, where they race against the clock for a personal best score and the chance to advance to a local championship.

Some teams earn an invitation to FIRST Championship, where teams from all over the world meet and compete. FIRST LEGO League Challenge event timelines and registration process vary by region.

2020 – 2021 SEASON THEME

FIRST® GAME CHANGERS powered by Star Wars: Force for Change

We know that when we move, play, and compete in any sport, we use our minds — our creativity, imagination, and critical thinking — as much as we use our muscles. It’s time to redefine the game and revolutionize the way we play and move. FIRST is teaming up with Disney and Lucasfilm for our 2020-2021 robotics season theme: FIRST® GAME CHANGERS powered by Star Wars: Force for Change.

This season, our programs will represent the evolution of our sports and activities that make us physically and mentally strong. For centuries, sports have played an integral part of our culture. The FIRST community is building a culture that recognizes the athlete in each of us— whether our talents lie on the court, in the lab, or with a controller in hand. It’s time to be GAME CHANGERS.

FIRST LEGO League team members, coaches, and volunteers all agree – season-ending events are the most amazing, inspiring experiences they’ve ever had. Where else can you make new friends, share ideas, solve problems on the fly, compete like crazy, and get pumped up over technology all while having the time of your lives? At FIRST LEGO League events, kids realize more than ever that FIRST is all about teamwork, sharing, helping others, and respect.

The 2020 – 2021 season presents some unique challenges with social distancing rules likely to still be in effect in many areas. As a result, regions around the world will have the option to hold Traditional FIRST LEGO League events or Remote events depending on the conditions in their area.
