FIRST LEGO League introduces science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to children ages 4-16 through fun, exciting hands-on learning. Participants gain real-world problem-solving experiences through a guided, global robotics program, helping today’s students and teachers build a better future together.
Our three divisions, Discover, Explore and Challenge, inspire youth to experiment and grow their critical thinking, coding, and design skills through hands-on STEM learning and robotics
3 FIRST LEGO League Divisions
FIRST LEGO League guides youth through STEM learning and exploration at an early age. From Discover, to Explore and then to Challenge, students will understand the basics of STEM and apply their skills in an exciting competition while gaining productive learning habits, confidence, and teamwork skills along the way.
GRADES PRE K – 1
For children ages 4-6, Discover is a playful introductory STEM program ignites their natural curiosity and builds their habits of learning with hands-on activities in the classroom and at home using LEGO® DUPLO® bricks.
A new and exciting Challenge is presented every year, and each team of four children begins their exploration of a real-world theme with an exclusive LEGO Education Discovery Set. With this set as a starting point, they build a solution to the Challenge with LEGO® DUPLO® elements.
FIRST LEGO League Discover closes with an in-school celebration event, where students work with other teams to solve a final collaborative challenge, demonstrating for friends and family the skills and concepts they’ve learned.
GRADES PRE 2 – 4
In Explore, teams of students ages 6-10 focus on the fundamentals of engineering as they explore real-world problems, learn to design, and code and create unique solutions made with LEGO bricks and powered by LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0.
Each year in early August, FIRST LEGO League Explore releases a new Challenge for teams that focuses on a scientific topic. Teams are sent on a journey of discovery to learn all they can about the topic, then present their findings in the form of a team poster and a LEGO model that moves.
The FIRST LEGO League Explore season ends with Festivals, where students showcase their team models and posters and share what they’ve learned with volunteers, friends, and family.
A festival can be as simple as a meeting of a team, families, and friends to share what was learned during the season. Larger festivals offer teams an opportunity to share and learn from one another.
GRADES PRE 4 – 8
Friendly competition is at the heart of Challenge, as teams of students ages 9-16* engage in research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering – building and programming a LEGO robot that navigates the missions of a robot game.
As part of Challenge, teams also participate in a research project to identify and solve a relevant real-world problem.
FIRST LEGO League Challenge teams prepare all season to compete at regional tournaments, where judges provide valuable feedback on their robot, code, and invention.
The final test of their work comes at the Robot Game table, where they race against the clock for a personal best score and the chance to advance to a local championship.
Some teams earn an invitation to FIRST Championship, where teams from all over the world meet and compete. FIRST LEGO League Challenge event timelines and registration process vary by region.
This year’s game is part of the 2023-24 FIRST season, FIRST IN SHOW presented by Qualcomm.
In the MASTERPIECE challenge, debuting August 1, 2023, FIRST LEGO League teams will imagine and innovate new ways to create and communicate art across the globe.
